is there another newsgroup for osteoporosis. This used to be a very active
message board and it is being used for other purposes not germane to the topic.
What is going on?

Not that I know of. If you find one, let us know, please?

Maybe all the users from the good old days went away as you seem to
have...

Really? Even the cross posting to the body builders boards a few
months ago seemed to have some useful information.

It's quiet. All newsgroups pass throuh quiet times.

Between Calcitonin, HRT, Fosamax, Actonel, Forteo and Testosterone people
are being cured and taking up activities such as rock climbing, beach
running and skateboarding instead of usenet newsgroup postings.

Take a look at
http://mp.medscape.com/cgi-bin1/DM/y/ecmq0GTggJ0Dzu0FEL70Ae

(especially http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/455629, page 3):
Risedronate (Actonel) reduced the likelihood of fracture after one year by 61%
Alendronate (Fosamax) didn't have the examination done after a one-year
time frame. It did result in "significant reduction". Perhaps
someone else can interpret the report better than I can.
Salmon Calcitonin didn't significantly reduce the risk of vertebral fracture after
one year. It did after five years in the group getting 200 IU/d,
but not in the groups getting 100 or 400 IU/d (which makes me
suspicious of the 200 IU/d results).
Estrogen plus progestin reduced observed hip and clinical vertebral fracture
rates by one-third. (Note that the report's author states that
this will understate the actual number of fractures). The trial
was stopped early due to the increased risk of breast cancer.

Another report (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/453232) talks about
a six-month head-to-head comparison of Actonel and Fosamax, with
Fosamax having better results (a greater percentage of the subjects responded
to Fosamax, and there was a greater increase in bone density) BUT there
weren't any fractures noted in either group.
