Dot,

Art gave you good advices. I just want to add that we should only lift what
our muscles can support and in the way that the weak muscles are not
involved. To pick a weight (a box, a child, a stone) bending our back is bad
because the muscles used are the one attached to the spine in other words
our back muscles. Unless we work on these muscles to make them strong, we
should not lift as above.

I also want to recommend a series of books by Miriam E. Nelson Ph.D. All of
her books start with “Strong Women”. She has very good weight lifting
exercises that can be done by anyone. She is worth reading. The books area
good source of information. I have 2 of her books and I follow the exercises
from both. They are called “Strong Women Stay Young” and “Strong Women,
Strong Bones”. She also has a WEB site at:
http://www.strongwomen.com

I am older than you and with worst T score in my spine. I am not taking any
medication for osteoporosis and I am doing lots of exercise both aerobic and
anaerobic. For the past 3 years, I have been doing a lot more gardening than
before. More vitamin D, I guess. Last fall I had my last DEXA scan and
discover an increase in bone mass in the spine. My hip was never a problem.
I feel my muscles have greater strength now and I have a better balance.

Another WEB site which is also very good is at:

I have seen these books, but thought they were about cultivating
a"strong" attitude. Maybe a little of both is needed? : )

That's great news! Congratulations! I love to garden too, but am
hopeless at it so far. I will have to get some pointers from you on how
to pull weeds, etc. without hurting myself.
